Family Welcome Packet

Clients who have family support during addiction recovery really value it, and so do we. We offer family therapy for everyone who enters our facility and wants to develop or rebuild their relationships whilst getting clean.

Why family therapy?

Happy FamilyAs well as individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and group therapy with other clients, family therapy can become a crucial part of addiction and substance abuse recovery. When in the depths of addiction, many family members feel lost and alone, unable to understand why their loved one is so determined to self-destruct.

Meanwhile, the individual experiencing addiction can often find their family’s concern unfounded and irritating, particularly if they’re still in denial about the power substance abuse has over them. When they do accept treatment, they will often feel remorse about the way they treated their family and friends during their addiction and want to make amends now that they’re clean and sober.

As well as this, there are a number of deep seated issues which can lead someone down the path of addiction in the first place. Family neglect, divorce and conflict can all influence addiction, so tackling these emotional triggers head-on is really essential to prevent the individual from relapsing in the future.

  • Physical exams to eliminate other medical conditions like thyroid disease that could cause the symptoms
  • Mental health assessments, including interview with family members
  • A mood chart diary to record and keep track of daily moods and sleeping patterns
  • Using DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)

The family welcome packet

Our family welcome packs contain the following:

Information about the facility itself and the therapies included

The family and friends of the client won’t have much contact with them for the first couple of weeks of treatment, so they may want more extensive information about the course of treatment and what it will involve. We also reassure all families at this stage that they will be informed of their loved ones’ progress throughout the length of the program.

Education about addiction

Many blame themselves for their loved ones’ addiction, but we don’t encourage this kind of thinking. No one person is truly to blame for addiction; there is always a combination of factors. With that said, there are certain enabling behaviors that many family members unwittingly engage in, which can exacerbate addiction. Our welcome packet highlights these behaviors for the education of family members.

Information about the family counseling program

Some are reluctant to enter into counseling, and they would never consider it for themselves. When a family member needs them to engage with it, however, it’s important that they have all the facts so they can make an informed decision. We provide a comprehensive breakdown of what our family therapy involves well before the first session.
