Watch Out for These 10 Signs of Declining Mental Health

Signs of Declining Mental HealthToday’s mental health treatment centers have pinned down a lot of mental health declination signs.  Understandably, it’s hard to pinpoint psychological problems.  Discerning a loved one’s thoughts, feelings and aspirations are difficult, and it’s even more difficult to take upon the monumental challenge of targeting lowering mental functionality.  There are, however, 10 signs indicative of failing mental health.  If you believe yourself or a loved one is struggling, consider the following:


Warning Sign One: “Doom” Thinking

 If traffic, laundry or a late visitation becomes a monumental failing, the individual may need a mental health checkup.  Doom thinking, or thought processes becoming instantly hostile, stressed or sad, is indicative of latent psychological problems.


Warning Sign Two: A Higher Focus on Appearance

 Mental health treatment centers believe a positive correlation exists between falling mental health and appearance focus.  Poor hygiene, itself, is indicative of a troubled mind.  That said, an obsession with physical appearance is also an important sign to pay attention to, as it’s indicative of a fatigued mindset indulging negatively.


Warning Sign Three: Day-to-Day Confusion

 Confusion and delirium may be indicative of a consciousness disturbance.  If your loved one is seemingly unaware of his or her environment, and if they become sluggish, drowsy or agitated when questioned about it, professional help may be required.  Mental health residential treatment typically targets this behavior, as it’s incredibly telling of deeper issues.


Warning Sign Four: Disorganized Speech

 Disorganized speech, too, may reveal underlying mental health issues.  If your loved one’s speech patterns don’t have logical connections, or if they jump from topic to topic, their rambling may display deeper incoherence.


Warning Sign Five: Extreme Moods

 A loved one having extreme outbursts, too, should be paid close attention to.  Periods of elation, anger, depression or even rage are prevalent in individuals struggling with mental health.  Similarly, an apathetic mood may hint at deeper depression issues.


Warning Sign Six: Giving Evasive Answers to Simple Questions

 Mental health decline may also be spotted in the individual’s unwillingness to answer basic questions.  Simple queries, such as, “What time is it?” may be met with roundabout responses, such as, “How should I know?” Sometimes, such an attitude may reveal deeper disorientation and agitation.


Warning Sign Seven: A Decline in Judgment

 If your loved one is displaying a lesser capacity to make correct decisions, or even judge situations properly, he or she may be revealing deeper issues.  Simple processes like shutting off the stove, leaving the water running or locking the front door may become difficult for those with waning mental health.


Warning Sign Eight: Drastic Weight Change

 Unnatural weight gain or weight loss, experts believe, may be indicative of drastically different mindsets.  Mania, depression and anxiety may all impact an individual’s weight, creating an imbalance in homeostasis.


Warning Sign Nine: Constant Loss of Balance

 Pay close attention to your loved one’s balance, too.  A reluctance to walk, imbalance or frequent trip ups may be indicative of mental disorientation in general.  While infrequent imbalance can be indicative of little more than dehydration, constant struggles with day-to-day mobility tasks should be carefully examined.


Warning Sign Ten: A Cluttered Home Environment

 The home is where the heart is, and an unkempt household may be revealing of deep-seated insecurities, stress or even depression.  Pay attention to your loved one’s surroundings, and make note of excess clutter, unsafe environments or piled up belongings.  Additionally, watch out for less-obvious indications.  Unclean sinks, scorched cookware or appliance misuse, too, may reveal lessening capacity.
