What Is Neurofeedback and How Does It Help?

What Is NeurofeedbackThe brain is the most powerful organ in the body as it controls the functioning of all the activities. Being a system of complex electrical and chemical actions, the brain has millions and millions of neurons which enable it to adapt to both bodily changes and the environment at large. At times genetics and other external stressors could interfere with the normal functioning of the brain causing it not to function at its optimal rateregulated. In this state, the brain becomes over-stimulated and under stimulated at the wrong scenarios. When supposed to be calm it tends to be over-stimulated and when required to be alert, it is found to be unaroused. The organ is known to be self-correcting, but at times this may not be the case – forcing external measurements and solutions to be employed. This is where neurofeedback comes in.

What is it?

Neurofeedback is a medical therapy in mental health treatment centers for healing and improving the overall functioning of the brain. It is also known as the EEG Biofeedback. It involves computerized programs which monitor the brain waves and in return provides a response to the Central Nervous System about the task carried out.

How does neurofeedback work?

When the brain is confronted with inconsistent internal and external function, it may have detrimental effects on overall health.  Neurofeedback is a therapy that is employed to help the brain to self-correct. A patient is usually placed in a relaxed environment and special sensors attached to the head. The sensors feed information on the brainwave pattern into the program’s software.

Neurofeedback aims to reinforce the brain waves functioning to its optimal. It is non-invasive and does not manipulate the brain into a specific direction. Some people may have reservations about the sensors placed on their heads, however, there is no danger.  Neurofeedback does not employ electricity or any invasive methods.

Neurofeedback sessions

The first thing the trainer will do is to take you through an assessment session to get an idea of your current physical and mental state.

After that, you will be taken to a quiet room and be seated in a reclining chair for your comfort. The trainer will attach sensors to your head and you may be able to listen to music.  The session lasts 30 minutes at most and you will come out more relaxed and stress-free.

How does neurofeedback help?

Neurofeedback is a mental healing therapy. It provides supplementary treatment to people battling with addiction, eating disorders, and attention deficit disorders. Benefits of neurofeedback in addiction treatment include:

  • Addiction is a serious mental disease which prevents addicts to function properly in their relationships, school work or career. Simple detox is short term.  It does not equip the addict with the coping strategies which are provided for when neurofeedback is combined with other cognitive therapies.
  • The therapy is also successful in training self-control through reducing stress, preventing negative thinking and helps boost reasoning. Through all this, the addict is able to cope with depression and anxiety.

NFB deals with the part of the brain that is not functioning optimally and reinstates the normal brain wave pattern. This is to help rectify the emotional and physiological imbalances caused by addiction.
