Women's Drug & Alcohol Rehab Treatment Center

drug and alcohol rehab for women 2Addiction can strike anyone regardless of age, race, and gender. It can come in different forms for every individual, but the effects are equally detrimental to their physical and mental. Thankfully, modern rehabilitation facilities are now ready to serve those who are in need of help – to restore their lives to normal.

While most of the reported drug and alcohol abusers are male, it is no secret that women also fall victim to the dark spirit of alcohol or the enticing euphoria of illicit substances. However, the reason why women turn to substance or alcohol abuse may differ from men per the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

A study cited by the Rehab International uncovered that females aged eight to 22 years old tend to abuse drugs and alcohol because of low self-esteem, peer pressure, and depression. The study further noted that while women are less likely to engage in drugs than men, those who do are more susceptible to falling deeper into these addicting elements, making rehabilitation a lot more difficult for them.

Overview: Women-Only Rehab

Women-only rehab centers can treat any kind of addiction, but most of them focus more on alcohol, heroin, and marijuana addictions as well as mood or anxiety disorders. Women-only treatment centers offer both inpatient and outpatient services.

Inpatient services, as the name implies, require the patient to remain in the facility so centers are able to monitor and care for them 24 hours a day. These are also the best option to eliminate any chances of relapse, since most people who have a history of addiction go back to being addicts and the patient is removed from the temptations that trigger relapse. Most of the patients who prefer this kind of rehab center are those with severe addictions.

“Research has shown that physical and sexual trauma followed by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more common in drug-abusing women than in men seeking treatment.” National Institute on Drug Abuse

Outpatient clinics, on the other hand, provide the patients to continue with their normal routines at home, school, or work. Gender-specific clinics can treat patients remotely and help them recover from their addiction efficiently, because they have experience in women’s needs and unique responses to treatment.

Rehabilitation programs for women also vary in length, depending on the severity of the patient’s addiction. Possible rehabilitation duration can last for about:

  • 28 to 30 days for mild addiction
  • 60 days for moderate addiction
  • 90 days or more for severe addiction

Why Separate Women from Men?

Aside from their reasons for abusing drugs, women also have different responses to treatment and rehabilitation compared to men. Thus, specialized rehab strategies were developed based on their needs and the severity of their addiction.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) presented the following problems that women are more likely to experience before they begin to abuse drugs and alcohol compared to men:

  • Young age
  • Rebelliousness over a particular system
  • Lower income level
  • Combined mental, emotional, and physical problems
  • Less educational attainment or the inability to be have a proper education
  • Stress
  • Physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment over a particular incident
  • More acute depressive symptoms when experiencing depression
  • Have family-related concerns such as childcare, broken family, and child abuse
  • Relationship problems
  • Spiritual need and/or maturity

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) echoes this data, adding that addiction treatment should not only be gender sensitive in terms of biological differences, but should also consider environmental and social factors that influence why women abuse drugs and alcohol. Doing so can also be helpful in motivating the patient to seek treatment.
