My Stay at Merito House
Before I came to treatment, my life was on the fringe. I was on the verge of losing everything that I worked so hard for. My car had just broken down, and the winter was approaching, and it was getting to be very cold outside. I had gotten a call from someone named Angela (bless her heart) and she asked me if I wanted to go to treatment. I had my parents on my case about my drug habit, and my boss had suggested that maybe I try a 30 day inpatient treatment. Later that day I had guns drawn on me by the local police department, and was trespassed from half of the city. Things were getting even worse. It was that moment that I knew that my life was becoming unmanageable. I thought to myself I should probably do what my boss said and go to treatment to get everyone off of my back, save up some money, and when I got out I could fool everyone again… but then something happened.
I went to Merito House in Redlands, CA, and something inside of me changed. I’m not sure if it was just being sober for an extended period of time (the longest stretch in my adult life), if it was an epiphany I had, or if it was listening to what the staff said, but something inside of me changed. I went from having hundreds of cravings a day, to having fleeting thoughts about using here and there. I’m not cured of my disease, but today I feel confident enough in myself that I can live life sober. And it’s thanks to the staff at Merito house. They showed me love when I didn’t have any, but they were also firm with me when I needed it. I really can’t say enough good things about the staff here. If you’re reading this and you’re struggling with addiction; make the call! You’ll be amazed at what a little bit of willingness, honesty, and open mindedness can get you!
I’d like to say thanks to Miss V, Maggie, Reggie, and Andrew for showing me love and teaching me how to live life. I’d like to say thank you to Skip for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I’d like to say thanks to Richard for “checking me” on my thinking errors. Thank you to Dennise for being a wonderful therapist. Also, thank you to Dan’l for helping me stay grounded, and helping me with my medication and detox. I’d like to thank Miss Kim for helping me out when I couldn’t sleep, and to all of the administrative staff for setting this wonderful program up and handling things behind the scenes. Special shout out to Raffi and Lorraine for cooking me some of the best meals I’ve ever had!
